‘Last Mile’ Solution for Brazilian Favela Born from Pandemic
This article from the Associated Press stood out to me as I was considering my privileges here in the U.S. in light of recent world events. There are many social justice themes present in the article, but it mainly highlights the inequitable distribution of resources between countries and social classes. I love how a favela resident, Giva Pereira, found an innovative way to bring new resources to his community and break the stigma that low-income places only have “bad things,” as he puts it. As a future language teacher, this feels like a reminder to always see my students as free and powerful agents, never as needy people lacking in something I need to provide.

Thanks for sharing this article Kira! I appreciate the emphasis on social class in your comment since – as we will discuss in this course – class has been ignored or backgrounded – when compared to identity politics.
