Flooding in the Pacific Northwest impacts some more than others
This article from the Washington Post, entitled “First fires, now floods: British Columbia and Washington reeling from atmospheric river,” details the extensive damage done by flooding in November in the Pacific Northwest. It discusses an issue very close to home for me: climate change is happening here and now, and is more and more visible all the time. I wanted to reflect on how personally, even though I have believed that climate change is a major problem for many years, I definitely hadn’t faced the realities of how it might impact me or my community until now. I am from Bellingham, Washington, and in my town, we have suffered intense heat waves, smoke from fires, and now horrible flooding, just in the past year. The first question I want to pose is: have you seen the effects of climate change in your home? And if so, when and how did you start noticing?
The second issue I want to discuss is the fact that climate change will hit lower income communities “first and worst,” to quote Van Jones in his Ted Talk about environmental justice. This hit me very personally during the flooding this past month. As you may know, Western Washington is very hilly, and the floods only impacted those who live in the flatlands. This does not include my family, or really anyone I know very well personally. The people who were affected live in more affordable areas that are very flat, especially including the areas outside of Bellingham, which I grew up calling “the county.” There are a lot of farming communities, and especially notable is the reservation which is home to the native people of the Lummi and Nooksack tribes. I learned about a farm in Everson, WA owned by a family who migrated from Mexico. Their farm is called Mariposa Family Farm, and the farm was devastated by the flooding.
I feel like I have had my head in the sand regarding environmental justice in general, and particularly have never thought about how these issues impact my neighbors in my home community. I am now compelled to get to know neighboring communities more, and the struggles they face. We are all going to be impacted by climate change, but some of us more and sooner than others. What does that mean for those of us who are able to escape the early ramifications of climate disasters?
