This short (< 3 minutes) video talks about implicit bias as it relates to racism but it applies to any form of discrimination. I liked the mental imagery of how Americans are reared to think of jelly (in a good way) if we hear the word peanut butter as it is a common sandwich pairing for kids. This almost subconscious thought process is similar to Pavlovian conditioning.

Thanks for sharing this Oliver. I am actually reading this book entitled Biased which talks exactly about the roots of this problem by drawing from neurological science and social psychology: https://www.amazon.com/Biased-Uncovering-Hidden-Prejudice-Shapes/dp/0735224935
I might actually scan some sections from this book and share it with you.
Also, one interesting thing mentioned in the book is association tests – rather than surveys – giving us more meaningful results in terms of implicit bias – just like the peanut butter jelly example here in this video.
Woah! Thanks for sharing this video Oliver. I think this is a great resource to use in class. I really appreciate how they define implicit bias and they disentangle it from the term “racist.” Depending on the other videos, I could definitely see using their series of videos in a unit.
And Deniz, I’m sure you know about it, but Harvard has had an implicit bias association test that they’ve done for years. I took it back in a Multicultural Education course in undergrad my sophomore year. I’m actually going to post it as a resource: here.
Oh I meant to link in my above comment: https://teachforsocialjustice.middcreate.net/race-materials/implicit-bias-association-test/
