Race Reflection

Albert Camus’s creation of Create Dangerously is a collection of speeches that he made after winning the Nobel Peace Prize (including just four days after, specifically for the first one). They focus on the notion of all artistic creations being a catalyst for consumption even though he criticizes the term art as being vague. We’ve all heard the phrase “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”, and Albert Camus discusses how society has the power to view whatever they want in whatever ways they want. This reinforces his notion that anything made will be forced to stand the test of time of different generations of people’s perceptions.

One discussion point that I would like to use from this book with my future students is the concept of power in the hands of the masses. We can reflect on how much power we have as individuals, as a part of demographics, and as larger parts of society compared to who has “assigned” power (i.e. executive boards on corporations, governments, etc). Who gets to decide what we pay attention to? Who gets to decide why we pay attention to a certain topic? And for how long does it stay relevant in the eyes of the people? These questions can be related back to social justice issues but can also be applied to topics that aren’t inherently social justice related, particularly with “cancel culture”.

Another thing I’d like to discuss is the concept of consuming translation pieces. I would ask my students to make connections on how accurately they think they are able to interpret and feel Albert Camus’s original intentions with this speech since (I’m assuming) it’s translated from French. The students would be able to engage in debate about how they can or can’t “understand” what other people are saying or going through without processing it through their own biases and thought processes. This would also allow them to identify, practice, or criticize “critical empathy” as it relates to social justice issues from their individual perspectives.

Something I think is related to our coursework is how Camus demonstrates (perhaps unintentionally) that political events can simultaneously pull people together and drive people apart from each other. The Create Dangerous speech was given in 1945 after the World Wars were over, and since I’m familiar with a lot of Camus’s work, I can assure you that this speech wouldn’t have felt like it was implying there was “leadership missing in the world” (and in France specifically) had those two events not taken place. This upcoming week we are talking about environmental justice and it seems like every few days there’s a new climate change-related topic that negatively affects indigenous peoples and people living in various conditions worldwide. I honestly think they should be classified as political events because the actions that humans have taken out on the planet has created such turmoil to the point that it will eventually drastically affect all of us in ways we can’t recover from.

    Hi Jada,
    Thanks for sharing about this, I had never heard of it but it seems very interesting. I loved the wide variety of ideas you had of how you could engage your students on this topic. The conversation about power seems especially salient to me. This quote stood out particularly: “Who gets to decide why we pay attention to a certain topic? And for how long does it stay relevant in the eyes of the people?” It reminds me of the summer after George Floyd’s murder, and a lot of critique from activists about people “losing interest” in the topic after a while.

    I would like to see what activities specifically you might built to address these rather daunting and abstract ideas. I would like to know how you were introduced to Camus – you mentioned you have read much of his other work? I have never heard of him. I assume it might be from French class or something?

    I have this book at home in Monterey but haven’t had a chance to read it yet. Now I am more curious. Like Kathi, I liked the questions you posed – to what extent is our agency – at the individual level- real? Your questions immediately took me to Times Square in the middle of the digital boards, posters, slogans, and all that advertisement and consumption. We understand the limitations of our agency when the threats/limitations/etc are explicit, but what happens when all the messages conveying various hegemonic ideologies are hidden (well, not so hidden in Times Square, is it)? How can we convey to others (including our students) that the “glowing” photo of a Victoria’s Secret model is actually rooted in capitalism, patriarchy, and potentially racism as well and harming not just the society/others but their own well-being at the same time?
