‘You Matter to Us’: Delta Air Lines Supports Black Traveler
This article is about Demetria Poe, a Black traveler, who was harassed by a White seat mate while on her flight to D.C. from Minneapolis. Delta Air Lines passengers and flight attendants came to her aid on that flight, and Poe was upgraded and given some personal gifts from Delta on her flight back home to Minneapolis.
I always find I have a healthy dose of skepticism whenever a large company takes a stand for social justice. Are they doing this because they believe in promoting social justice or do they just want to look favorable in the public eye? Whatever Delta’s motivations, Poe felt supported which is important. It does make me wonder: when it comes to large organizations like Delta, how much do intentions matter? Of course, one would hope their intentions are genuine and in the long run, systematic change only happens when heart’s are changed not just surface level rules. But this act at least helped support a Black woman. Even if their intentions weren’t entirely genuine, this act could have positive and powerful ripple effects that promote BLM. Which is more important?
I would consider this a good news story which is rare according to the mainstream narrative that only bad/negative news sells. I understand your healthy skepticism as to what the true intentions of Delta are but it is ultimately what they say and how they respond that counts. I think Delta made a good business decision and that is ultimately their goal: it exists to make money. Delta might have been motivated by good morals or it could have simply been a pragmatic decision. It brings to mind other pragmatic decisions which also happened to align with morality. The mid-1960s saw important legislation passed in the US such as the Civil Rights Act, which essentially ended Jim Crow era in the southern states, and the Voting Rights Act, which essentially made the US a true democracy for the first time. These acts were supported and pushed through congress by President Johnson (Dem), a racist in today’s lens.
