New levels of appropriation?
Race-shifting, apparently people do this? The entire idea of this concept makes me livid. My entire childhood experience was being ashamed of my “stinky” home-cooked meals. To the point where my mom conceded and fed me and my brother Lunchables. LUNCHABLES. Those things are nasty. And not nutritious at all. Are there even non-chemical ingredients in Lunchables?
But now there are entire swaths of populations who get to choose to be indigenous because it makes them sound more interesting? No.
This article reminds me of another, “Decolonization is not a metaphor” by E. Tuck and K. Wayne Yang. This second article outlines how many white people are quick to point out a distant Native American princess ancester.
These concepts are so important to teach in class because, especially youth have no idea that these stories they’re being told could possibly be harmful. For children, it’s cool to have mixed backgrounds. I remember having my own “Ancestrial Passport” project as a kid. We had to interview family members and learn about our heritage. Everyone got to say they were part this, part that, part somethingspecial. I was just … 100% Vietnamese. And somehow that was bad.

One cannot spend their entire lives turning away from a population and then claiming it willy-nilly. Unless one bears the responsabilities of being a part of a group, especially an indigenous group, one is not. One cannot simply claim First Nation membership without the acknowledgement as a tribe. Group identity cannot be claimed without paying one’s dues.
Minority identity is not to your resume what sprinkles are to ice cream.
Wow, this is shocking. This is actually why I hesitate to call myself Czech-American, even after realizing while living in Czechia that I’m more Czech than American–because I didn’t grow up as a first- or second-generation immigrant, with all the baggage that involves, so can I really claim a hyphenated title? And those are just two kinds of white.
On the other hand, being white I can feel the “allure” of having “exotic” not-white blood. But, c’mon guys. Get a hobby. That can spice things up just as well and in a much less offensive way.

I think you have every right to call yourself Czech-American. If that’s who you are and the group you identify most with, more power to ya!
I can’t begin to eloquently lay out how I feel about the issue, but this is maybe an attempt at a start:
I think I’m just most upset because I’m kind of a hypocrite? I grew up trying to be as white as I possibly could throughout my childhood and adolescence. I listened to the music I was supposed to. I joined the cheer team, the dance team, I swam. I avoided the “Asian” sports (badminton and tennis at my school). I studied French (full disclosure, one of my native languages) instead of “Vietnamese for heritage speakers.” I distanced myself from the FOBs, instead I aligned myself with the ABVs (American Born Vietnamese). I wore the overpriced Abercrombie, I popped my polo collar. It was … a mess.
I rejected my own culture, trying to be a part of the “norm” because that’s what society told me what I HAD TO BE to survive in this world.
It wasn’t until I moved to Europe and everyone always saw me as “Asian,” (more specifically, Chinese) that I realized, no matter how well I spoke any Western language, no matter how I dressed, or acted, I am and will forever be perceived as “Asian,” and more importantly .. being Asian shouldn’t be a negative. It’s taken me another decade to fully embrace who I am and my cultural heritage, besides the name thing, I still Westernize the spelling and pronunciation of my name.
So with all of this identity struggle, it beyond irks me that someone can just come along and claim a different race due to a supposed distant relative. They can make these claims with 0 of the actual societal reprecussions. A white person can say, “Oh, my great-grandmother was Japanese, so I’m Japanese!” Without ever having someone show “NI HAO!” at them from across the street, or having been thrown in a glorified concentration camp during WWII. Someone can claim that their distant relative was black, but never deal with the generational trauma of having been borne from slavery.
