Land acknowledgments meant to honor Indigenous people too often do the opposite – erasing American Indians and sanitizing history instead
There are various perspectives on land acknowledgements. In some of the conferences I attended last year for instance, the speaker would almost be perceived negatively if they didn’t start their talk with a land acknowledgement. Here‘s an interesting article on how land acknowledgements should move beyond conveying “What was once yours is now ours” to respect and restoration.

It reminded me of similar perspectives I’ve read and heard, especially this article ( https://issuu.com/alaskahumanitiesforum/docs/forum_summer_2020__3_/s/10768057 ) about land acknowledgment in Alaska. Like the article you posted, it seems that one of the biggest issues with land acknowledgments is when they become more fashionable than functional – and when there is no follow-up or no call to action. I really appreciate how this course pushes us to not only educate ourselves about social justice issues but also to keep asking what there is to do, and to inspire our students to do, to make change.
Hi Deniz, thank you for posting this. This is something I’ve been wondering about recently — how effective are land acknowledgments in fomenting actual social change. The reason I started wondering is that two members of the Rumsen Ohlone tribe visited Netta’s Intro to ICC class as guest speakers a few weeks back. They talked to us about the history of the tribe, how members keep traditions alive and pass cultural and historical knowledge on to the next generations, raise awareness in the broader community, and the legal struggles that the tribe has faced and is facing. The biggest struggle is that the Rumsen Ohlone have no rights to their ancestral land (in the current Carmel area). I asked the speakers a question to the effect of, “What can we do so that our land acknowledgments aren’t just treated as empty words?” One of the speakers answered that we should put faces and names to the tribal land acknowledgments and get our audiences to think about the real people behind the words, their histories, their cultures, and their struggles. I think this is a great idea, but it obviously requires a lot more effort on the part of the person acknowledging — undercutting what was a quick and convenient way before. This tells me that decolonization and liberation cannot be quick and convenient, and we must put more effort into understanding and disseminating information about the tribes who we intend to acknowledge. And we should ask ourselves, “What am I actually trying to accomplish through this land acknowledgment? Is it just to make myself feel better?”

I think it is of critical importance that Settlers’s (in a very simplified form, those non-Indigenous people living on Indigenous lands; but the term “arrivant” is used by some to refer to Black folks and their descendants who were forced by Europeans to come and toil in the Americas and elsewhere with no remuneration and suffered tremendous violence, and can also be extended to refugees or asylum seekers who were forced to flee their homes) land acknowledgements (LA) be only a FIRST step in acknowledging where we live, whose land it actually is, and must be an indication that we are taking action to redress histories of genocide, dispossession, psychological trauma, etc inflicted by colonizers as well as the ongoing, contemporary impact of those actions by Settlers. If all we do is have an LA in our email signature or make an LA at the beginning of a talk, then it is purely performative theater–a box-ticking exercise. But if we are truly engaging with and supporting Indigenous people in the projects and efforts that are THEIR priority(-ies) in there territories where we live, then we are living up to the spirit and intention of an LA.
