Justice Department Sues Yale University Over Admissions Practices
The Justice Department filed a lawsuit Thursday against Yale University, alleging the school violated federal civil-rights law by discriminating against Asian-American and white applicants in undergraduate admissions. I was surprised when I see the discrimination is to both Asian-American and White applicants. “Inclusion” seems a hard process. Here is the link

I am wondering what your thoughts on this news.

Hi Xinxin,
I think it is important to clarify that this lawsuit is alleging discrimination against white and Asian American students. Nothing has been decided as yet. The fact that a case has been bought against Yale does not equate guilt. A similar case was brought against Harvard in 2014 and another against the University of Texas in 2016. Based on the following statistics from I am not convinced that these lawsuits are about justice for all. https://www.npr.org/2019/10/01/730386096/federal-judge-rules-in-favor-of-harvard-in-admissions-case
Interestingly, the WSJ article gives racial demographics for the 2023 Yale graduating class as:
Asian American = 26%
white = 49.3%
African-American=11.8%
Hispanic = 15%
Native American = 3% and
International students = 9.5%
I, personally, am not shocked by Yale’s demographic make-up when I compare to data from the Brookings Institute’s data on the racial demographics of the total US population in 2019 (old and young people – not just population of college age citizens):
Asian-American = 5.9%
White= 60%
African-American= 12.5%
Hispanic= 18.5%
Native Americans= .7%

What I do find shocking is the price tag for one year of undergraduate tuition at Yale:
$53, 430 in 2018/2019

Xinxin,
I agree that this is a very complicated issue especially when looking at the data that Rebecca provided. The link below is a Washington Post article about the same story (I couldn’t access the SJ article):

The Justice Department alleges that Asian and Whites have fewer opportunities than those individuals who identify as Black, Hispanic, Native American, Pacific Islander and some Asian subgroups such as Cambodian, Hmong, Laotian and Vietnamese. In essence, if the lawsuit were to be upheld, there is the strong possibility that some of these admissions spots would be taken by other Asians and Whites – based on fairness. The administration could be looking to appease its White base of support by showing that it is protecting lost White opportunities. The fact that the lawsuit was filed now, three weeks from the election, can’t be overlooked as a politically motivated stunt.
