One of my Japanese English teacher coworkers at the high school where I worked in Japan suggested that we watch this TED Talk during one of the lessons for the advanced English class. I was very struck by the idea that there could be another way to assess students besides the usual concrete letter grades or percentages. As a teenager, I was always obsessed with scores and grades, and it was very bad for my mental health. According to the studies cited by the speaker, Carol Dweck, there is a lot of promise in evaluating students who haven’t mastered something in a new way — not a low score, but the words “not yet.” Unfortunately, school funding and school rankings are still decided by test scores and grades, which in turn reflect historical inequalities and discrimination. I hope for a day when children will not be judged in this way.

Your creativity knows no bounds. I’m constantly amazed by your ideas.
