Nearly 1 in 5 hate crimes motivated by anti-LGBTQ bias
In this online NBC News article, Nearly 1 in 5 hate crimes motivated by anti-LGBTQ bias, FBI finds by Tim Fitzsimons from Nov. 12, 2019, (3:36 PM PST) students can view and read about some statistical trends from the FBI’s latest Hate Crime Statistics report towards the LGBTQ community in the US. According to the report, almost 19 percent of the 7,120 hate crime incidents reported in 2018 were motivated by an anti-LGBTQ bias. The subheading also states, “Of the incidents involving sexual-orientation bias, 60 percent targeted gay men.” The statistics show that their has been a trend for the past five years of a steady increase in the number of incidences of hate crimes each year towards the LGBTQ community. Additionally, of the hate crime occurrences, there has been an increase of attacks targeting people rather than property. The statistics can be overwhelming. If I were to use this article with ELL students, I would probably have them draw charts, graphs, and diagrams to visually represent the statistics as they read them. This would help with their understanding as they read, as well as help assess their comprehension of the statistics.
