California to enforce ‘gender neutral’ toy aisles in large stores

As mentioned in this article, “California has become the first US state to require large retailers to display toys and childcare items in gender-neutral ways.” I am not sure about this though:

“It will apply to retailers with 500 or more employees across their California stores.”

So it only applies to chains? Does anyone have any information on this?

    Hi Deniz,

Thanks for sharing this article. I didn’t know that Galvin Newsom signed a new law to have a gender-neutral section for toys and childcare items. When reading this article, I found it interesting that there won’t be a gender-neutral section for clothes because clothing and the way people dress is often times associated with gender.

I also agree with Low in that having toy sections that are strictly for boys and girls creates norms of what boys and girls should do and how they should act. This reminds me the “Moonsand” commercial that Renee shared in sociolinguistics (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zgdj5FXOOp8). The video suggest that boys should be in professions that are more labor intensive. While girls, are expected to like colorful things and be gentler.

Since this law is planned to be in effect in 2024, I wonder if lawmakers will make any changes to it. For instance, expanding this law to retails stores with less than 500 workers.
