I chose this reading from a list of readings for Netta’s Power and Identity in Intercultural Contexts class, and I’m blown away by it. I had heard the word “decolonization” a fair amount of times before but didn’t really understand what it meant. I had also assumed that I understood what culturally responsive pedagogy was, but I didn’t. This chapter opened my eyes to new understandings. I think this should be required reading for all TESOL/TFL students at MIIS and I highly recommend it!
Zoya, thank you so much for sharing this. What an incredible resource. I have read Decolonizing Methodologies (which I think is available via the MIIS library) by Linda Tuhiwai Smith, and I really love the perspective of decolonizing teacher education. One part of Smith’s book that stood out to me was that we need to acknowledge that academia as it exists today is an inherently colonialist project and research, in many instances, is another form of European imperialism that continues to perpetuate pain and trauma on many indigenous communities. The resource you shared really brings home the fact that we, as practitioners in the field of language education, have a responsibility to question where our knowledge comes from and how we disseminate it to our students.
This encourages others to explore the reading with an open mind.
Inspired by your insights I dove into the chapter you recommended on decolonizing teacher education. It is indeed eye opening challenging my preconceptions about culturally responsive pedagogy. A must read for educators aiming to reshape perspectives.
