Why gender equality is good for everyone – men included
This TED talk, given by a sociologist Michael Kimmel, is about the importance of gender equality for everyone, including men. He talks about why we should all support gender equality, using research data about the higher rate of happiness, satisfaction, and health in the more gender-equal society. He emphasizes the point that gender equality is not a zero-sum game but a win-win game that benefits everyone.
What I liked about this talk is the personal anecdote at the beginning. He talked about the conversation between a black woman and a white woman he witnessed in graduate school. The black woman asked the white woman what she sees in the mirror every morning (The white woman replied, “a woman.” while the black woman replied, “a black woman.”) and told her how race is invisible to the white woman. “Privilege is invisible to those who have it.” I think this comment is so powerful and so true. That’s why we need to make gender visible to men and make them aware of their privilege as a man. I related this piece to our “Understanding our privilege” posts, which gave us a chance to reflect on how much privilege we have in terms of various aspects like class, race, gender, etc.
I think this talk might be useful to start a discussion about privilege, not just about gender equality. He gave specific examples like the conversation above and the TV show, “A Black Woman Stole My Job,” so I could have students think about how privilege works from these examples. Also, the speaker gave some convincing data about the benefits of gender equality, but didn’t talk about how we could actually convince men to take actions in daily lives, like equal participation in housework and childcare, so it could be another discussion question.
The personal story shared in the TED talk resonates deeply highlighting the importance of making invisible privileges visible. Incorporating this perspective into discussions about gender equality can be a powerful way to foster awareness and drive positive actions.
