On Intersex
I wanted to put together this post to share several sources on intersex that I think could be really useful for classroom discussions and activities.
Here’s a newspaper article of a family’s story rejecting gender normalizing surgery: https://www.nbcnews.com/feature/nbc-out/you-can-t-undo-surgery-more-parents-intersex-babies-are-n923271
Here’s a report by Human Rights Watch (with a video): https://www.hrw.org/report/2017/07/25/i-want-be-nature-made-me/medically-unnecessary-surgeries-intersex-children-us
And here’s the website for Intersex Society of North America: https://isna.org/
Let me know if you ever end up using these resources in your class or engaging in discussions with your students on intersex!

Deniz, thanks for sharing these resources. Our discussion around Greg’s lesson plan inspired me to dig into this issue a little more, and I came back to watch these videos (and read the article from NBC). The Human Rights Watch video is especially helpful (in my opinion) as it clarifies when such a surgery might be medically necessary (if there are urinary tract issues, for example) and when it would be cosmetic. In the video with the NBC article, the scene when the doctor invited Ori to speak to medical students and explained that there is not much training around procedures and recommendations related to intersex children stood out to me. Atul Gawande’s book Complications (and much of his other writing) addresses issues like these in the field of medicine (not intersexuality specifically), and it helped me get a better understanding of the fallibility of medicine (and medical practitioners). We’re often taught to revere doctors as experts – and they are to an extent, but they are also humans who were educated in a program designed by humans in a field that doesn’t have all the answers. In addition to recognizing that science doesn’t offer us absolute truths about life and living organisms (especially surrounding fetal development and infancy), I think it’s important to include intersex in any discussions of biological sex/sex assigned at birth. To be honest, I think I still have a ways to go before being comfortable having a conversation that goes into the controversy surrounding surgeries on intersex children in a language classroom, but I really appreciate the resources and the opportunity to learn more.
