The Oscars’ new diversity rules are all well and good, but will they make any difference?
This article published in The Guardian discusses the new Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which selects the winners of the Oscar Awards, rules for best picture nominees which will come into effect in 2025. Under the new regulations, entries for best picture must satisfy two of four criteria to be eligible. The headline criterion is on-screen representation: at least one lead character in the movie must be from “an underrepresented racial or ethnic group”; at least 30% of the general ensemble cast must be from at least two underrepresented groups (women, racial, ethnic, LGBTQ+, or people with disabilities); or the movie’s subject must concern one of those groups. The other three criteria call for similar representation behind the camera: in key crew members and department heads (standard B), in studios and distributors’ apprenticeship schemes (C), and for representation in marketing, publicity and distribution (D). Critics argue against “forced diversity”, wonder who defines an underrepresented group, and notice that few, if any, previous winners would have changed. Supporters say cementing these criteria protects underrepresented groups, whether they have already been given opportunities or not.

I understand the criticisms especially concerns regarding who is considered as “underrepresented” but I agree that this is a small but significant step…especially thinking about how expensive the movie industry is maybe it would encourage more funding spent towards those movies which would be under-financed otherwise. I wonder why 2025 though? So that movie producers can add “underrepresented” populations in their movies so that they can win an Oscar? Why not now? Shouldn’t they be represented in the movies …starting from now?!
Oh, if you haven’t seen it yet – Trumbo (on Netflix) is an interesting movie that tells the story of “Communist” screenwriters in LA who were prosecuted and barred from the industry around the 50s and 60s.
