[News re: non-binary individuals] How society’s views on gender impact relationships (and more)
Here is an article that summarizes how US society impacts non-binary people. It touches on pronouns, romantic relationships, and social media. I will include the infographic from the article below. This infographic shows how non-binary people’s identities intersect with race, class, sexuality, and more.

Hi Zoya, thanks for sharing this infographic! Do you know what year this data is from? (I tried to click on the picture or find a link to the article, but it’s not there.) The statistics regarding economic and educational status are obviously horrible, and it stood out to me that 54% feel less respected than other people. It made me reflect on when I first became aware of non-binary as a gender identity and I don’t think it was until the end of high school. I did not know any non-binary people until college. I think what that really means is that many of the people in my circles of friends and acquaintances did not feel safe enough to share their gender identity until they were older or until the societal narrative had changed and become more accepting (although that may not necessarily be true). Now, at least 3 people I grew up with have disclosed that they are non-binary. It makes me wonder what I, my teachers, and the school administration could have done differently that might have allowed these students to feel more safe, although of course there are many other factors besides school environment that go into a person’s decision to disclose their gender identity.
Hi Kira! I haven’t personally met any non-binary people, but one of my students in the online high school Japanese as a Foreign Language class that I teach responded that their pronouns were their/them in my preliminary needs assessment, so I’m glad I asked! I think the data in the infographic is from 2021. I think this is the source: https://williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu/publications/nonbinary-lgbtq-adults-us/
That is awesome! Thanks for the link. The website is really clear and easy to navigate. I think it would make a great teaching tool/resource too.
Perfectly balanced between detail and simplicity.
Great effort, well appreciated.
