Iceland aaaaalmost had a female-majority parliament
Sadly, the dream was not to be, but Iceland is one of the few nations in the world to come tantalizingly close to electing more women to seats in parliament than men. Here is how the BBC reported the story if you prefer that outlet. But I was heartened to learn that Rwanda, Cuba, Nicaragua, and Mexico all have female-majority parliaments (or it’s at least 50-50). But don’t count Iceland out! I fully believe they’ll eventually achieve this laudable and necessary goal! After all, this is the first nation in the world to have had an out, queer head of government and their current PM is a woman as well.
Hi Greg,
This was really interesting to read about! Thank you for sharing. I’m curious to know if having more female members in the seats actually changes anything about policy for women. The BBC article says that Iceland has been a champion for equal rights for genders (and YES to equal parental leave), but it doesn’t say whether that change happened when more women were added to the seats or not. I know, at least, in the United States, not all seats in government are created equal and I wonder if it’s the same in Iceland as well.
That being said, I’m all for more women in politics and I’m proud of Iceland for almost accurately representing the gender spectrum in government. Also, to the other countries who do have a majority of women in politics!
Iceland journey towards a more equitable parliament is commendable. Though almost this time the momentum for change is undeniable. Onward to breaking more barriers.
