How Language Classrooms are Moving Past the Gender Binary
This article from the New York Times showed up in the ACTFL SmartBrief newsletter today. It’s about teaching gendered languages (Hebrew, Italian, and French are the main examples in the article, but there are many others). The use of “they/them” in English to refer to a 3rd person singular subject is a relatively simple adaptation to better include nonbinary individuals, but not all languages present easy solutions. I recently came across a book in Russian discussing the use in English of “womxn” and the difficulty of finding similar solutions in Russian. I especially loved the final quote from Hebrew teacher Mx. Janner-Klausner: “Language learning is the breaking down of a binary: You started off with a binary of familiar and foreign, and then you break it down,” they said. “What was foreign becomes familiar as you learn the language.”
