Should We Stop Flying?

In this interview, Greta Thunberg described her experience arriving to New York for the first time ever on a zero-emissions boat. She explained how upon landing at the dock, the smell of pollution and unnatural gases filled her lungs and disgusted her. I find it interesting that Greta decided to take a zero-emissions boat to the US. Though it has inspired many of her fans, friends, and family to also adopt a no-fly policy, I don’t know if their efforts will prevent or even lower the emission of green house gases in the environment. Don’t you think more resources are needed if both a boat and a plane arrive to the US?

In our globalized and fast-paced world, I don’t think planes can ever become obsolete. Sure, her efforts may have inspired a select few to take trains long distances instead of planes, but I don’t know if less people on an airplane really does much.  The planes will still fly. People will still need to get from point A to point B in as little time as possible. In my opinion, a solution would be finding a way to make planes more sustainable. Does anyone else have thoughts about this? I realize my opinion may be ill-informed.

I might use this video in a language class to investigate my suspicion. I would ask my learners to find other seemingly sustainable practices that may be more harmful to our environment than helpful. I would love some insights from you all about this video and her justification for coming to the US on a boat.
