1 Million Women Foundation: Empowering Women & Encouraging Sustainability
The 1 Million women foundation
…is an association of women worldwide dedicated to helping women (but can be used by men with an open mind too!) to lower their carbon impact on the planet. The goal is to make women aware of easy, simple, and cheap ways that they can change their carbon footprint. The activities are specifically female targeted – small ways we can change our hygiene routine, be mindful about the fashion we purchase, or using reusable produce bags.
The association aims to empower women specifically in that it connects the user to other women in your area of residence.
I posted this as a DMR because they created a very user-friendly app that provides the user with challenges to take on. If a teacher were to dissect the language functions of the challenges in their lesson planning, they could easily incorporate this app into their lesson plans. For example, one challenge I came across was the challenge to write a letter to your local politician to push for climate leadership. A teacher could use this aspect of the app to formulate a lesson plan concerned with the language of persuasion and the grammatical structures that follow. Another challenge invites participants to create a vertical pallet garden using old milk cartons. This type of a “how to” challenge would be a good way to teach the language of direction giving. The ideas are great.
Concerns about use of the app in the classroom: (any of these topics would make great conversations)
- How does the app reinforce or impose stereotypes about what is “typically female” around its challenges? (how do they choose their challenge? Is the app sexist?)
- Thinking of the other end of the sexism spectrum, if you had a class with both men and women, how could the teacher use this app without making the men feel like they are excluded?
- Other than uniting women through the “find a group” feature, how does the map truly empower women? In what ways can the challenges in this app be changed to empower women?
I really like the idea of using this is a class, both because it is a well-intentioned website and app but also because of the possible sexism present in both things. Very interesting find!
Hey Kate, I agree with Jacob! The idea to use this app in a language classroom is brilliant! So much to unpack. I am going to download and see what I can do to lower my carbon footprint this afternoon. Like we discussed in class, this app could put a positive spin on something that we typically feel guilty about. Yeah my carbon footprint is larger than it should be, but what can I do to change that?
I think an extension of this app could reach out to male populations as well…I mean thinking of the mission, we want everyone to do more, right?
As we’ve discussed in class, this app has the potential to help us feel better about doing something that normally makes us feel bad.
