‘The formula of violence is the same everywhere’ ? Brazilian fruit-pickers face sexual violence
This article is about the sexual & physical violence that women working on Coconut farms (called quebredeiras de coco – or Coconut breakers) are facing. This article represents intersectionality because on top of the harassment and intimidation that they fear, they are being run off of their land by cattle and soy farmers who are violently burning down their forests. Many of these women are environmental activists.
Farm owners are using fear and intimidation tactics to set an example: acts like pretending to run them over, whipping them with a horse whip, or throwing the babassu coconut basket after they have collected the coconuts in order for the women to work harder and faster and follow the rules. However, it isn’t usually the farmer doing the “dirty work,” they hire gunmen called “pistoleiros” or “jagucunos” to commit these scare tactics acts.
However, the farmers themselves are committing acts of sexual violence and contributing to rape culture. An interesting point made in the article is the culture of being called a “vagabunda” (whore). One quebradeira says that farmers also ask, “‘Don’t you have anything better to be doing?’ or ask their husband, ‘Don’t you take care of your wife?’ or say, ‘If you don’t take care of your wife, I will’.
It fascinated me that the farmers are “okay” with certain types of violence such as sexual violence committed verbally, but when it comes to committing physical acts of violence the farmers draw the line and hire someone else to do it. For me it drew the question, where do we draw the line? What do we consider to be violent or harmful.
Finally, did the tittle of this article catch your attention? It caught mine! The full title of the article is “The formula of violence is the same everywhere’: Brazilian women face sexual harassment and physical attacks on farms”.

This article highlights an urgent issue that needs more visibility. The intersection of environmental activism and violence against women in Brazil is shocking. Furthermore, I believe that awareness can be raised through engaging projects like the Sprunki game. By incorporating real issues faced by communities, such games can educate players while promoting empathy and advocacy. It’s vital that we support these women and their rights to a safe working environment.
