It examines the dire conditions the people of Madagascar endure to export crystals that are that are marketed towards privileged communities. The article focuses not only on the on the unjustness of the fact that the crystals mined are sold globally for exuberant amounts compared to what the laborers receive that allow them to purchase “a cup of rice,” but also on the attitudes, reactions and lack of action in addressing the situation.
Additionally, the mining threatens the rainforests in the region, endangering the species in the natural environment. Zo Andriamaro, a Sociologist and human rights analyst, interviewed for the article, stated that mining at this scale is “intrinsically, fundamentally unsustainable and destructive.” Furthermore, she stated, “You can never pretend that you will restore the environment to its initial state.” I believe these are thought provoking words that can be used to spark discussions.
This is definitely a long reading for an ESL/EFL class. However, it could be broken up in to sections and read over a period of time. Or, I would probably break it up into sections and turn it into a jigsaw activity.
