Spanish Podcast about gender identity connecting with linguistic and national identity

For my Spanish class, we listened to this podcast from Radio Ambulante. It is in Spanish, but here is an article relating to it in English, or you can find a translation in English at the first link. Micah was born in Mexico but now lives in the United States. He describes how he didn’t have words to express his gender identity as a child. The gendered nature of Spanish makes navigating gender identity particularly challenging. In English, if you say “I’m tired,” you don’t have to choose how you identify, whereas in Spanish, the language constricts you to choose a masculine or feminine ending for yourself. Micah talks about how he would sometimes just not choose an ending, or he might say the word in English instead. This story details Micah’s journey of identity exploration from his childhood, to current day. He has tried many different “labels,” that ended up not feeling right to express his gender identity.

Even though Micah didn’t want to choose from within the binary, he ended up doing so because if he transitioned to male legally, he would be able to marry his female-identifying partner. This was before gay marriage was legal in the United States. So it turned out in Micah’s case, transitioning in the eyes of the law gave him more rights.

Podcasts that share the stories of individuals are a great resource in the language classroom. In my class, we discussed the story together and each made individual reflection posts about it. This is an activity I could certainly see doing in my future classrooms. It is so great as a language learner to be able to listen to a story about a social justice topic about which you are passionate. It means that students can engage more authentically with the language, and hopefully forget they are using the language because they are so deep in the content.
