The new hit Netflix Show Maid puts the spotlight on the experience of a low-wage domestic worker in the US. Unfortunately, I’m not sure how well it portrays the intersectionality of race/immigration status and social class, but it definitely shows that of gender and social class. Here is an article digging into the criticism of the choice to portray a white main character instead of a person of color. I haven’t personally watched the show, but it could be a resource for teaching students about poverty in the US.

Hey Zoya,
Thanks so much for posting about Maid! I watched the first couple episodes and was pretty hooked. It takes place in Washington state, which is especially relatable for me personally. I have definitely seen sharp economic contrasts in beautiful oceanside communities in Washington. There are giant mansions with amazing views owned by super rich people, next to run down houses tucked away in the forest.
I agree that it is certainly worth a discussion about the choice of a white woman in this role. It is absolutely true that her struggles would likely be compounded if she was a woman of color. That being said, I think it is notable how much the system doesn’t work for her at all, despite her race and nationality privilege.
I also think this would be interesting to show to students abroad, especially given that some people seem to have a perception that the United States is a place where people thrive, and it is easy to build yourself up if you just work hard. This show would be in sharp contrast to that, and it explores many important issues. I am going to finish watching the last few episodes now. 🙂
