Mind your XYZ’s as well as your ABC’s
In the LA Times today there was an op ed talking about how Asians and Asian Americans tend to have last names at the end of the alphabet at a higher rate than any other race. It’s very short, but the author puts a reminder that teachers should make sure not to just call on their students starting from the beginning of the alphabet. It’s a rather interesting read about how it impacts people to always be called last.

Thanks for sharing this Sarah! I knew about this idea of switching up the alphabet, but I truly had never considered how it could relate to systematic racism. I thought it was just to make people with certain names feel better. I guess I have never much related to this problem since both my first and last names are right in the middle of the alphabet. This article reminded me that systematic racism is lurking everywhere, even (and especially) in places that we hadn’t considered. I guess our culture is a little obsessed with alphabetizing things… We would probably do without some of that! I like the idea of having a randomly organized class list.
