Hi Mujun, I remember reading that Jane Austen, one of the English language’s most revered authors, also used singular “they.” It’s really amazing that people will be resistant to something just because they think it’s connected to a political stance they disagree with. It also reminds me of this (sad but) funny exchange on Twitter: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FBYcESzWQAIzo1u?format=jpg&name=900×900 … people already use singular “they” without realizing it!!
Dear Zoya, thanks for sharing. At first I am really confused about singular they because I thought it could be only used in plural forms but now I think I would ask people about their preferred pronouns and if they want to be called “they”, I will certainly do it.
Mujun, thank you so much for sharing this article! I, too, had no idea that the singular “they” dated back so far. I think I have always used it orally in an informal sense (and not specifically thinking about gender, though I would use it if I wasn’t sure about someone’s gender). But, I distinctly remember in high school being told by my English teacher not to use singular “they” and being marked down for it in my writing samples. So, for years afterward, I would always say “he” or “she” when writing, even if I thought singular “they” would be a more appropriate choice. I am glad that more people are using singular “they” now, since I think allows for more inclusivity in language. Thanks again for sharing this, Mujun!
