Is Norway a responsible global actor in the fight against climate change?
While Norway superficially has put its money where its mouth is in terms of investing in renewable energies, modernizing its automobile and public transportation fleet with more electric vehicles, and reduced its own consumption and burning of fossil fuels, it continues to externalize the ills of oil mining and production and profit off of them by selling its oil to other countries. This is a frustratingly contradictory and hypocritical stance, which effectively just amounts to greenwashing P.R.

Hi Greg, thanks for sharing this article. I didn’t know this about Norway, and I wonder how many other places like it in Europe that I think of as “sustainable” (Germany, for example) have similar practices. I also had not heard the term “greenwashing” before, and it’s a great one, so thanks! One final thought is, I did appreciate how the Norwegian government’s policies spurred innovation that promoted sustainability. I wonder, had the Green Party “won” and laws were passed to start reducing oil drilling/exports, how they might have been “forced” into more innovations, and if that would have provided more jobs. But I also understand the Labour Party’s side, and how things are not that simple particularly regarding workers’ well-being in the short term. I can’t begin to imagine how policies like these would play out in the US.
