We Want Our Coach Back
The article here talks about students at a Colorado high school that walked out in protest after their volleyball coach was driven to quit for being gay. Student protesters waved LGBTQ+ and Trans Pride flags and carried signs reading, “Love Thy Neighbor,” “Jesus Loves Inoke,” and “We Want Our Coach Back.” An organizer of the demonstration, Lucy Sarkissian, blasted the school’s alleged conduct as both “disgusting” and “un-Christlike.

Hi Yanci, thanks for sharing this article. Something similar happened at my undergraduate university, which was also a Christian school, to a gay professor in our nursing program. You can read about it here: https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/nursing-professor-sues-seattle-pacific-university-says-he-was-denied-full-time-job-because-hes-not-heterosexual/
Apparently this isn’t uncommon– the article talks about a few other examples of discrimination against LGBTQ+ educators in the Seattle area alone. In addition to the moral hypocrisy, it’s also so frustrating that it seems to come down to money and image. The professor at my school was *already* teaching there, and was literally just denied a full time position because of his sexual orientation.
Hi Kira,
Wow, thanks for sharing that news article. I didn’t realize how common this was to happen to people. I also saw the teacher’s story that I shared on Ellen, but I think about all the other stories that are not being shared or receiving any media coverage.
This is sort of different, but I had a friend who worked at a Catholic school and I remember her telling me that she couldn’t have a man at her house late at night and couldn’t be seen at a man’s house late at night. She was a young single girl and had to keep up a certain image if she wanted to keep working at the school. I don’t understand how a person’s work can decide what you can do on your own personal time.
