Where Were the Hijabs on the Met Gala Red Carpet?
This article, linked here, is written by Libyan American journalist Noor Tagouri. In the context of a broader critique of the Met Gala’s lack of Muslim and Hijabi representation, she touches on many points not only germane to our course but also the readings this week and there are two I would like to highlight.
Firstly, she touches on the ways in which BIPOC or individuals from communities outside of ‘white America’ are included in print media (and beyond) to check a box and become tokenized commodities for diversity. This made me reflect on Gray’s reading for the week, representation in classroom materials, and how our choices as educators impact our students’ perceptions of others and self.
Secondly, Tagouri mentions at the end of the article that she, “… [chooses] to no longer fear retribution from people in an elite space who pick and choose who is worthy this season through the narrow lens of their own privilege.” This is an incredibly powerful statement and tied to Friere’s comment about overcoming fear from our DSR. I am wondering how our intersecting identities and the privileges that come with them contribute to our ability to overcome very legitimate fears.
I also want to note that I selected the race and gender news categories because American islamophobia racializes Muslims in very nuanced ways and Hijabi women are often the most recognizably Muslim members of society.
I am excited to hear your thoughts!
