Reflection 3, Notes On “Camp”
Originally, I wanted to submit this reflection related to Steinbeck’s Vigilante due to studying and living here in Monterey. However, my small penguin print has not yet been delivered so I will post my reflection pertaining to Susan Sontag’s Notes on “Camp”.
In Notes On “Camp”, Susan Sontag describes what “camp” is and how it is a particular way of seeing the world as an aesthetic phenomenon, and in terms of stylization. A very common phrase I always heard growing up is “that is so campy”. However, I never gave much thought into what this truly meant and the origins. In the essay by Sontag, they explain how “camp” is related to movies, art, clothes, furniture, songs, people, behavior, buildings and even more.
What is exactly said to be “campy” is determined by the eye of the beholder. However, also within the essay Sontag mentions nothing in nature can be declared as “camp”. It is also mentioned that things become campy when things are not old, but when people become less involved. Visual input and decor is a major component of “camp” art. Camp often seems to be extravagant and there is an attempt to do or create something extraordinary. One major point of camp is to dethrone the “seriousness” that is all around; camp proposes a comic vision of the world around us. Not in a tragic way, but instead a more theatrical way. During the 1960s “Notes on ‘Camp’” was a threat to heterosexual supremacy and heteronormativity. This text was also part of a larger movement to destabilize or overthrow hierarchies and ‘camp’ served as a route to achieve this goal.
One of my favorite quotes is from RuPaul, “We’re all born naked and the rest is drag”.

Hi Joshua – Susan Sontag is an important figure actually – I will comment more on “camp” but can you tell us how you decided to move from Steinback to Sontag?
Sontag is an important figure and I am glad that I decided to read the essay. I chose Sontag as it was available online. Many of the other choices must be ordered online for delivery and I have already experienced issues obtaining The Vigilante. I am not sure if I could make any comparisons between Steinbeck and Sontag otherwise.
Hi Joshua,
Your reflection brought to mind an interview with Claire Danes referring to the Baz Luhrmann movie, Romeo + Juliet as being ‘campy’. Would that be accurate in your mind? Another question: in France the Yiddish word ‘kitsch’ gets used a lot. How does ‘kitsch’ compare to ‘camp’?
Some would agree that Romeo + Juliet is ‘campy’, however, I would not declare this as campy in my personal views. I have also heard of this Yiddish word being used, these are used very interchangeably can be stated as the same.
