Nike’s diversity advert causing a backlash in Japan
Nike has recently released a commercial in Japan about three foreign girls being isolated and bullied at school, but gained confidence sporting in Nike shoes. This has caused a backlash in Japan as Japanese netizens feel offended when Nike used racism and school bullying as the perspective of the commercial. Some argue that there is no racism in Japan. I found similar situations in Japan and China, where the majority (over 90%) of the population are from the same ethnicity or race, and thus do not have as many social discussions on race as in the United States, and many people may consider the race problems as something exotic. And that may bring us back to the question we discussed in class about how we should teach race problems in an EFL or foreign language class.
This reminded me of the intersectionality of class, race, and colonial history in East Asian countries. Colonial history brought a Western-dominated discourse to the globe and Nike is one of the representatives of western culture. Therefore, people may think kids who can wear Nike is someone who is closer to a prestigious life created/decided by the westerners, because people usually contempt some local brands and regarded Nike as a brand that represents a higher class rank.
