Fifty Shades of White

This is a painting on display in Duke University Museum. I attended a lecture by Professor Yan Liu about applying art appreciation in Chinese classes. This painting was among the teaching examples she shared for intermediate-level students. The students were asked to 1) describe the picture; 2) talk about the connotations of the picture; 3) discuss their feelings about the picture; 4) discuss the social problem revealed by the picture in depth. As “pictures worth a thousand words”, museums can be a great resource for language teachers to lead into various serious topics in class.
