Social Class Represented in Television
This student opinion article from the New York Times discusses social class and how it is portrayed through public television. Students share their voices, opinions and beliefs around social class throughout this article. Social class can be represented in many varying ways through social media and public television, but I think it is important to be mindful of what is being represented and to understand if it truly applies to real world contexts. What are the messages trying to be conveyed throughout media related to varying social classes and hierarchies? Are these messages socially just and where is the power or perspectives coming from?
Josh, this article about the impact of TV on the author’s life is interesting. I think any and all outside stimulus, whether TV, commercials, speeches, books, articles, music, signs, fashion etc., leave a mark on people. This mark can be subconscious or conscious but that is why we would best serve ourselves by critically observing and listening. I gather in the author’s case, he consciously wanted to learn things from fictional TV that he could not have otherwise learned. It was a success story since he achieved what he wanted; acceptance by outward appearance/behavior into a different class than his birth and upbringing. To many others, however, it could lead to an unhealthy desire for or jealousy of what others have. I have heard of the Facebook effect in much the same way; Facebook unintentionally leads to depression in many people because they compare subconsciously or consciously compare themselves to others’ lives as they appear on Facebook.
Facebook and other social media has definitely affected younger generations differently compared to our generations. I saw another article recently that snapchat and the filters have really altered the perceptions youth have on themselves. Through these virtual realities and social media, there is a fine line where virtual reality is becoming actual reality and it can be challenging to distinguish the variation at times.
Hi Josh,
This news made me think that universities are opening their gates to different classes of people to access, at least they are trying to. But most other aspects of society have not aligned with the actions we need to take for justice, such as the TV shows mentioned in the article.
