Teaching white privilege as uncontested fact is illegal, minister says
This article makes me really really angry. Kemi Badenoch is the women and equalities minister in the UK. These words coming from a black woman from this position make me wonder if anti-racism can ever win against capitalism. Because there’s no way I believe that she “believes” what she says. This can’t be internalized racism. What do you think?

Deniz, I agree that this appears to be a less-than-progressive decision. I do think that although Minister Badenoch is responsible for her own actions, she is a representative of the ruling government, the Conservatives, and as such probably doesn’t set the policy (I am not a UK government expert however). In this instance I suspect that she was told to make a statement dictated by the ruling party and if she didn’t, she would probably be looking for a new job. The Conservatives are in power now and they were proponents of the Leave EU movement, another less-than-progressive decision in my opinion.
Yes, Oliver, it’s kinda chicken and egg situation. Is it because her conservative and racist ideas she is employed for this position or is it because of the ruling government she is making these announcements. Probably a little bit of both, right? It is the same in Turkey. The ministry of women and family always makes the most misogynist claims..so infuriating! Again, this makes us wonder (or confirm) that/if social institutions (law, education, government) are serving everyone or just tools for social reproduction?
Deniz, I, too, am disappointed and disgusted by the women and equalities minister, Badenoch, comments and actions. Her speech gives little hope for justice for Black people in the UK. Also, this situation makes me think of Black artists, actress, and actors and their investment in marketing their brands or “selling out”.
In situations like this one I think we should search for the intersectionality. Specifically, the socio-economic motivations of minister Kemi Badenoch. I suspect she is wealthy or comes from money and is more interested in protecting her wealth through legislation than promoting justice for all.
A little bit of googling turns up this:
“Kemi Adegoke was born in 1980, the oldest of three children of a Nigerian family. Her father is a GP and her mother a professor of physiology. When her mother needed obstetric care that wasn’t available in Nigeria, she came to a private Catholic maternity clinic in Wimbledon. ‘That’s the reason I am a British citizen,’ Kemi says.”

She reminds me of Candace Owens, who is married to the son of a British Brexiteer and son of a British Lord, George Farmer. I think their politics are all about amassing and /or maintaining personal wealth:

I don’t know how to edit my comment, so I’ll amend it here:
Candace Owen’s husband, George Farmer, is a Brexiteer and the son of a British Lord, Michael Stahel Farmer, Baron Farmer is a British businessman, philanthropist, former treasurer of the Conservative Party, and life peer in the House of Lords.
After reading the news, I am a little confused because the reasons she gave for her statement is almost the opposite as what I originally thought.
First, I don’t think privileges should be connected to guilty. If it is connected to guilt, then the children from higher classes or richer families would also feel frustrated to learn that they are born with guilt. It is compassion and justice that should be taught with white privileges.
Second, I am surprised by the statement that learning about slave history can make black children feel inferior. It should be the white children that are in danger of feeling inferior because they are not as talented and smart as they thought they were. The previously oppressed class should be taught to be empowered by their oppressed history as they are not intellectually inferior to the others but just not given enough opportunity and resources. They should be taught to gain power from their status and participate in the power to change.
Third, when I saw the term “anti-capitalism Black Lives Matter movement”, I am not sure if it is the BLM or the anti-capitalism that they are actually opposing.
