The women fighting sexual abuse in the factories where your jeans are made
This podcast reports on a story which broke last year about widespread sexual violence against women in garment factories in the country of Lesotho. These factories produce jeans for top brands such as Levi’s and Wrangler. The factories, owned by a Taiwanese company, would operate using casual female workers chosen at the gates, who would then be expected to enter relationships with the male bosses who had selected them. A result of the news report has been a first of its kind garment industry agreement for Lesotho, known as the Lesotho Agreement. The agreement attempts to tackle gender-based violence in the garment industry. A stipulation allows the brands to end their contracts if the treatment of women doesn’t improvement. To date no supervisor has been criminally charged and it is unclear if they have even lost their jobs.
