Immigrant representation on TV over-emphasizes criminality, study finds
This article in The Gaurdian discusses the representation of immigrant characters in US produced television programs during a year period from 2018-19. There was an over-emphasis of criminality for immigrant characters as well as an over-proportionate focus on those who are undocumented. The data are slightly lower than the previous year but remained above the real world numbers. As an example, 22% of immigrant characters were associated with crime which is wildly overinflated. Actual statistics show that immigrants, both legal and illegal, commit fewer crimes than native-born Americans. Asian and Pacific Islander immigrants remain under-represented while there was total invisibility of transgender or gender non-conforming immigrants and undocumented black immigrants. The harm is that what we see depicted on TV can influence our thoughts both explicitly and implicitly. The people who make the decisions about the story lines and casting of programs for our viewing have a powerful position. While the shows may be enjoyable, as independent thinkers we should be asking ourselves: What biases are they pushing?
