The Controversy Surrounding Netflix’s new film “Cuties” (“Mignonnes”)

Thank you for this article, Maya. Without it I could easily have assumed that the film was another dance movie in the vein of “Step Up”. It’s interesting to see that the reaction of some to the film is to cancel their Netflix subscription. This strikes me as yet another way of silencing women and voices of color. I watched the movie and was disappointed in the direction and writing of the film. If I were to given it a letter grade it would be “D”. I understand the topic the writer tried to cover, however, the camera work was discomforting and there were fundamental plot holes. I believe the writer/creator of the film wholeheartedly tried to open conversation about the lack of sexual knowledge and education provided to girls of color. Yet the film was distasteful. The film lacked a connection to the themes the writer wanted to cover because of the poor camera work and dialogues.
But, I strongly believe and encourage people to watch the film because the main protagonist’s feelings and actions are realistic and telling of today’s society’s influence on young girls.
