Rename Squaw Valley
This article discusses the recent decision to rename a famous ski resort in California. The decision is a result of the changing of the times with social justice coming to the forefront of the nation’s consciousness and the fact that the term “squaw” has evolved to being a derogatory term for native American Indian women in modern American English.

This article is the perfect length for use as a springboard to a discussion on the renaming of monuments. I could see using it with a class of Intermediate Low (CEFR B1). The text is rich with examples of various past tenses and interesting vocabulary: ‘settlers’ – who were the ‘settlers’ ? Is there a more accurate term for them? Think of a new name that would honor the memory of the Native American women seen working when the settlers arrived at Lake Tahoe.
