What if Jesus had tried to enter America?
A church in southern California has set up a rather shocking nativity scene for the holiday season. The scene depicts Joseph, Mary, and baby Jesus in separate cages, mimicking the current situation at our US/Mexico border.
While not a Christian myself, I find value in these public displays because our country is Christian dominant. How is that groups who claim to have the same core values can practice them so differently?
I would like to connect this to the quote our nation was basically founded upon
“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me:
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”

How have we as a society moved from this ideology to thinking it is acceptable to lock up human beings, who have done nothing wrong, simply for seeking a better life for themselves?
This topic is such a salient one, especially where we are now in CA because so many of our students are immigrants themselves, or the descendants of. How can we inspire our future students to pause their busy school schedules and care? How do we inspire them to do something about it, amplifying their voices in the fight against global injustices.
I saw this too! And as a Christian myself, it disgusts me how much hatred American Christians so often display. So much of what Jesus is known for involved confronting those very attitudes and making people uncomfortable. Love how this nativity scene does that.
I don’t know much about Christianity outside of the stuff I hear quoted over and over on TV/loud people. But I feel like the basis of most religions is to just … love others? Or at the very least, let them live their lives?
I just don’t udnerstand what benefit one could gain from actively hating someone else. Cool, you’re mad all the time, want a ribbon?
I love when groups, or individuals, can use art, or “common knowledge,” to make people really re-evaluate their beliefs.
