“A Global Gender Rights Tragedy”
***TRIGGER WARNING*** Strong derogatory language.
Watch Ashley Judd give a TedTalk about how online misogony is basically like a cancer to society and why it must stop.
She starts the Talk by quoting the various people who have harrassed her online. These comments range from old-lady jokes, to death threats, to off-handed rape comments. It’s as if somehow being behind a keyboard makes all of these comments that people would probably not say to a woman’s face perfectly acceptable. She shares her experiences, how she’s responded to these comments, and the results in a sassy and relatable (maybe only to women?) manner that I appreciate.
Judd goes on to talk about what must happen for change to really take place.
I was an online gamer for a very long time. Many a sleepless night was spent behind a keyboard tapping away, slaying monsters, going on team quests, and building friendships that I hold to this day. After a decade of being a semi proficient online gamer, I left the platforms completely. Why? The invention of player-to-player voice connection, platforms like Twitch. All of a sudden, because I was a female gamer, it was OK to call me a b* or a sl*. For no reason other than not wanting to engage, accidentally stealing a kill, or simply existing in the same space. And because it was voice recognition, I heard what sounded like children all the way to older men engage in this kind of behavior. Toxic is an understatement.
These kinds of topics are so important, but because of the language, I hesitate to show it to even high schoolers, although I know that they have most likely heard much worse in real life. But the reality of language is that it’s not always safe, maybe it could be a great point to take up with students where administration is not looming overhead. The common statistic is that 1 in 3 women will have been harrassed by the time she reaches adulthood. This topic is something we must cover with our students and equip them the tools to manage such situations.
During a workshop that I led this past weekend, I had the attendees fill out an identity timeline. One of the items I asked them to reflect upon was when they first became aware of gender, and whether it was a positive or negative experience. Every single woman talked about a time they were shamed because of their bodies. Their childhood bodies. One woman was taught that “boobies” must always be hidden, another was told that she had to be aware that she was distracting men, one was simply told she needed to cover up. All of these realizations were early childhood memories.
Let’s reflect upon that.

That is a really good tip especially to those new to the blogosphere.
