Uranium in Navajo Women and Babies
In this article, Mary Hudetz talks about how decades after Cold War mining in the Navajo Nation in New Mexico, uranium is still being found in Indigenous women and their children. They found that upwards of a quarter of the 781 women tested had concentrations of uranium in their body that “exceeded levels found in the highest 5% of the U.S. population.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, unranium compounds can damage the respiratory tract. It also may cause kidney damage. Uranium mining began on Navajo and Lakota lands during the 1940’s during the nuclear arms race with the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Uranium sourced from mining is used almost exclusively as fuel for nuclear power plants. During this period, private companies hired thousands of Navajo men to work the uranium mines — disregarding the known health risks of uranium exposure.
If we want to teach about language and culture, we cannot ignore the atrocities that our countries have caused to even our own people. This could tie into intercultural communications in talk about long-term orientation versus short-term orientation. Indigenous peoples protect the environment, the earth, because we are all visitors on this planet. Humans are temporary, we come and go, but the earth will (hopefully) always be around for us to enjoy. The US, which places a lot of emphasis on science, seems to ignore warnings if it means getting to an end goal. The US government had to prove that it was strongier and scarier than the Soviet Nation, but at what cost? This short-term plan to build as many nuclear power plants as possible to scare of one international threat has caused long-lasting effects on the people they are in charge of protecting. What’s the point of scaring off potential foreign invaders, if we are destroying the very land we want to protect?
