3% Netflix Series – “Freedom Has a Price”

The featured image for this post depicts Joana, a fierce female candidate of “the Process” with the words “Freedom has a Price”

This show has been my addiction since its release in 2016. 3% show now boasts of three successful seasons and was the winner of the 2019 Rio de Janeiro Global Audience Award. It’s one of those shows that keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very end. You might end up blacking out mentally and watching an entire season in a day (like myself -I’ve watched the first and second seasons twice now).

The show takes place in a post-apocalyptic Brazil. The “inland” is where what is left of the population now trying to survive in extreme poverty. Each year, members of the Inland partake in a highly competitive contest called “the process,” where they have to solve elaborate puzzles, show their tact and mind skills, and fight for survival. Of the thousands of competitors, only 3% of the competing population is chosen to be sent to “the Offshore,” a paradise-like island in the middle of the sea that has bountiful crops, food, medicine, and high-tech science. Inland citizens scrape by to survive (and avoid violence), whereas Offshore members live in comfort and happiness until they expire. Inland members get one opportunity to take part in the process in their entire life, and some citizens lose their life in “the Process”. However, as you can imagine, the members of “the Offshore” are highly corrupt and “the Process” simply immoral. Some members of the inland try to resist (I won’t give any spoilers). Although the show infuses sci-fi/futuristic aspects, the concepts and social dialogue that the show communicates are incredibly realistic and thought provoking.

The show hits upon just about every aspect of social justice issues you could possibly think about (if you watch with a critical eye,) but I have chosen it for Immigration/Peacebuilding intentionally. The idea of “who is worthy of the offshore” is strikingly reminiscent of the idea of”who is worthy to enter the United States?” and “under what circumstances do we allow them in – despite how dehumanizing they may be?” – all while the world turns a blind eye. In light of Joana’s photo, I pose the question: What price are people willing to pay for their freedom? To what extent will people abandon their home, their family, and even risk their own life to be in a free world? Does the US immigration policy resemble the framework that “The Process” was built from?

If you watch the show imagining that “The Offshore” is symbolic of the United States (despite the fact that even the US has characteristics of “The Inland”), and “the Inland” as symbolic of Latin America, the show is an unbelievable platform to discuss issues of inclusion and peacekeeping. Although this show is extremely dramatized (thanks Netflix) it is a great springboard for a language classroom. The show is offered in Portuguese and English, so it can be used for either a Portuguese language course or English language course. I am going to be watching this with my BUILD Portuguese students and developing critical thinking questions for them post-episode.

12 OUT OF 10 WOULD RECOMMEND TO A FRIEND!
