The Opportunity Atlas

I came across the Opportunity Atlas whilst creating a unit plan centered around “The American Dream”. This interactive map is an interesting starting point to talk about issues of inequality in distribution of wealth, incarceration rates, and loads of other topics. This map is statistics-based and provided by the US Census Bureau, so even if it is not used for a lesson plan it is a way to show inequalities in this country and use dataĀ to support your points. I’m not sure, but I think Deniz might have shown us this at the very beginning of the course. I think it is the most relevant to our final unit of Race and Ethnicity as this “atlas” breaks down statistics based on race as well.

Wow, this is so cool! Partly because I just love maps, especially interactive ones. šŸ˜‰ But also because it can really help to visualize different issues! It’s especially interesting looking at how different regions tend to pattern across different issues.
